Grief can be difficult to put into words, but writing can offer a gentle space to process loss, remember, reflect, and express what may be hard to say aloud. In this supportive Lit Youngstown workshop, participants will explore poetry and writing prompts designed to help them navigate grief. No previous writing experience is necessary, and there is no expectation to share anything you write. Come as you are, write at your own pace, and discover how putting words on the page can create space for remembrance, connection, and healing.

This six week workshop will meet in-person Thursday evenings at 6pm (October 8, 15, 22, 29, and November 5, and 12 ) at LOOP Arts & Culture Center (805 Mahoning Avenue). This workshop is open to the public but registration ($45) is required. Details on how to complete payment will be emailed to participants 2 weeks before the first session. To register, click here.

Workshop leader Sydney Stalnecker is a writer, teacher, and former journalist. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in English, as well as her Teaching of Writing Certificate, from Youngstown State University. She remains at the university as an adjunct first-year writing instructor. Her news articles are published in The Jambar, where she was Editor-in-Chief and Executive Producer in 2021 and 2022. Occasionally, you may find her reading her poems at local open mic nights.
