Richard Knight

photographer, graphic designer and social media manager

For over eight years, I dedicated myself to the support and promotion of Denver artists and galleries, particularly in Denver's Art District on Santa Fe. While I worked primarily in photography, I also provided social media and graphic design services to many of the district's artists and galleries.

As a member of the Art District on Santa Fe Board, I was committed to advancing the concerns of the art district, its members and supporters, and the community at large.

My own photography practice often attempts to highlight observable but often missed or overlooked moments, and to find significance in the seemingly mundane.

Thirty years on, my graphic design experience includes logo and identity design, graphics for social media, and publication/news page design and layout as art director at a monthly sports and recreation magazine.

As a social media manager for a public relations firm in New York City, I’ve written tweets for celebrities such as Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo (so, the Hulk and, you know, the Hulk), Susan Sarandon, John Leguizamo, and Private Joker himself, Matthew Modine.

Early in 2022, I was honored to be awarded an Art District On Santa Fe residency. While simply participating as a fine art photographer would have been rewarding, I decided to turn my opportunity on its head, focusing my residency on the art district itself. I decided to give the project a name: ratherMETA. Once my residency ended, I continued to my mission to raise the profiles of artists and galleries in the art district and elsewhere in Denver.

My wife and I relocated to Youngstown in February 2025. I hope to continue my art advocacy work here.

Even in the day-to-day grind, there is beauty. It isn't always obvious, as beauty is often hidden in the mundane, the humble—and, yes, the conventionally ugly.

The most interesting things in life are often imperfect. We are drawn to—and fascinated by—imperfection. We seek out the interesting, the compelling, perhaps because we feel more connected to reality than to an unattainable ideal.

I’ve spent a lot of time on the streets of cities like Baltimore, Denver, and Seattle in pursuit of the less-than-obvious photograph.

I hope to bring images of the urban—and very real—world to an art ecosystem awash in sweeping landscapes, dramatic sunsets, pretty flowers, and images of awe-inspiring wildlife. I love these things. I do. I just feel that there is much left unexplored because it doesn’t conform to some conventional aesthetic standard.
